Aung San & “My Fathers Tatmadaw”
On the night of 31 December 1941, at the height of the Imperial Japanese march across Asia, thirty young Burmese men gathered in a house in occupied Bangkok. A silver bowl was brought among them, and a syringe passed around. Blood was drawn from each man’s arm and secreted into the bowl. Together, they pledged loyalty to Burmese independence and eternal comradeship. Through that ceremony, through the spilling and sharing of blood, the Burmese Independence Army was brought into being, and thus the embryonic stage of the Tatmadaw.

Royalist Realism & Lèse-Majesté
The Lèse-Majesté law, also known as Article 112 in Thailand, forbids any criticism of the monarchy in the kingdom under punishment of imprisonment. Even those far removed from the machinations of Thai politics are vaguely aware of this law. In an era where basic freedom of speech is held as sacrosanct, this law is globally recognised as being bizarre and archaic, and hardly used for anything other than protecting an already seemingly beloved institution.

To Stop Smog Pollution: Empower the Farmers
During the past two decades, the north of Thailand has been turned into a corn factory farm, pouring toxic smog into the sky. Government, business and environmental groups offer few solutions. The only way to free us from this poison cloud is to empower farmers, to give them more autonomy and bargaining power against monopolies in the agricultural industry.

Understanding Thailand
Articles from our Understanding Thailand, ongoing series, which take a look at the deeper background of the Kingdom, examining its culture, history and material conditions. These are primarily for outsiders to gain a better understanding of Thailand.

The Real Face of Thai Feudalism Today
The Real Face of Thai Feudalism Today – TLDR
“The purpose of Jit Phumisak’s book was to expose how the plight of the rural Thai peasant in the 1950’s was a vestige rooted in the old feudal system, laying bare its horrors and its exploitative framework. Jit wrote this book as an antagonistic rebuttal against the revisionist history of the ruling classes taught to most Thai’s at the time (and still today), which typically depicts a utopian agrarian past, rather than the brutal exploitative reality.”
“In the early Thai Marxist tradition of the 1950s Thailand was famously described as a “semi-colonial” state, in reference to the Berney Treaty (1826) and the Bowring Treaty (1855), both of which were signed under coercion. These treaties granted huge concessions to the British, allowing them to ‘all but’ colonise the Kingdom’s ports, essentially monopolising trade, while beginning the shift from a feudal to a capitalist economy. The treaty also gave extraterritoriality to all Britons, exempting them from prosecution under Siamese law, akin to the Unequal Treaty signed by the Qing Dynasty after the opium wars. Indeed, gunboat diplomacy was integral in the Bowering Treaties signing, after the British threatened to send their navy into Bangkok. Siam, however, was able to retain technical sovereignty, hence the term semi-colonial. “

Euro-fascism With Thai Characteristics
Euro-fascism With Thai Characteristics
“In the 1930s, Thailand began a project of mass homogeneity based on western Euro-Fascism. This project was refined by the monarchy in the 1950s, leading to a reactionary consensus lasting a half-century. However, many elements in the recent protest movement, so far, fail to recognise their own deep-seated Euro-fascist tendencies when challenging the contemporary Thai state.”
Thai Imperialism and Colonisation
“The version of imperialism in Thailand can be considered ‘auto-imperialism’— though ‘imperialism’ refers to the expansion of a nation’s borders abroad, ‘auto-imperialism’ (like how ‘auto-cannibalism’ refers to the consumption of one’s own body) is a means of imperialism conducted on endemic populations. Specifically, the capture of populations already within a nation’s borders, who were previously living outside of state control and influence.”

Nationalism & Anti-Statehood In Thailand
Nationalism & Anti-Statehood In Thailand
“Far from Bangkok, in a village deep in the northern hills, sitting with a friend, she tells me frankly: “We are not Thai and we try not to be Thai, “Sometimes I find myself talking to my family in Thai and I think no, try to be Lisu.” She is a member of one of Thailand’s myriads of ethnic minorities, in this case, the Lisu. The Lisu people can be found spread across Thailand’s northern hills deep into northeastern Burma and southern China; they are a stateless people with their own language, culture, religion and practices completely distinct from any of the national states that envelope them.”
“Thaksin Shinawatra defined Thai politics for a generation and forever reshaped it. Somehow, this elite capitalist billionaire became the unquestioned champion for a destitute peasantry. Thaksin’s politics defied left-right categorisations, creating an economic miracle, lifting millions out of poverty while further developing the very same mechanisms of capital that had placed them in said destitution. He was a deeply complex and flawed character, but one that was ultimately a victim of his own success.”

A Blurred History of Insurgency – Patani
We spoke to Noor Netusha Nusaybah, a Malaysian Patani historian, about how today’s insurgency is connected and shaped by its post-WWII roots, which are often shrouded in misunderstandings, conflicting or competing narratives and secrecy.
“Historically Patani was a vassal state of Siam and it seems the modern inception of the nationalist movement was during the Second World War. It’s a real challenge to trace the origins of the insurgency and make a linear chronology, so much of this depends on oral history, relying on the memory of those who lived it, so you often have these competing narratives.”
Royalist Realism & Lèse-Majesté
“The Lèse-Majesté law, also known as Article 112 in Thailand, forbids any criticism of the monarchy in the kingdom under punishment of imprisonment. Even those far removed from the machinations of Thai politics are vaguely aware of this law. In an era where basic freedom of speech is held as sacrosanct, this law is globally recognised as being bizarre and archaic, and hardly used for anything other than protecting an already seemingly beloved institution”. This law, however, is not simply used to protect the dignity of the monarch against insult. Lèse-Majesté laws are in reality a relatively small mechanism which is part of a larger systematic structure of censorship, used as means of social coercion to manufacture what we can term royalist realism.”

Royalist Realism & Lèse-Majesté

Bhumiphol Adulyadej
Those seeking the divine essence may find it, just as those looking for an erudite moderniser may see him as such. Bhumibol is seldom portrayed as an individual who underwent this teleological or ideological shift. Instead, his entire life is presented on a flat plane -all at once- affording his image an unmatched gravitas and fluidity, cementing his infallibility.
Rainbow Agrarian Populism – On Phue Thai
Phue Thai bring both green-cap-wearing communists and luxury-watch-wearing real estate moguls into the same coalition. By all the rules of 21st-century politics, they should not exist, they should not be possible, but somehow they have been capable of creating this oft-misunderstood paradigm shift. As the mood of the global south increasingly shifts towards a new paradigm, with the development of BRICS, the re-alignment of trade away from US-centric markets and new calls for economic sovereignty, states like Burkina Faso, Mexico and China are experimenting with new models that break from the political science textbooks. In many ways, Phue Thai’s vision was ahead of its time, with its golden years running between 2001-2006, yet the party is still alive today, affording us an insight into another potential future, another paradigm.

Periphery Core & Reconciliation
Periphery Core & Reconviliation
Here, we sit on the event horizon between core and periphery, if there is anywhere it can be reconciled, surely it must be here. Not just Thailand, but other regions that fall into the same global economic bracket of the middle-income trap. Can there be any interaction between the periphery and the core? Right now, we’re in northern Thailand. Here, we’re caught between the periphery and the core. We’ve seen refugees from across the border, carrying deliveries from the ice trucks into the pristine co-working spaces, effortlessly gliding past the professional email writers in their air-conditioned chambers.
Thailand itself is caught between the periphery and the core. Still today a “major Non-Nato ally,” which pays endless lip service to our comrades in Beijing. In reality, our heydays as a cold war colonial outpost are long past. Slowly crumbling away, Thailand is a relic of the old bipolar world, weighed down by auto-imperialist bloat and imprisoned by long irrelevant foreign imposed dogmas. How do you reconcile it?
The Bhumjaithai Party poses the most serious threat to the interests of the poor in decades. Unlike Pheu Thai’s disruptive populism, which sought to mobilise peasant agency as a political force, Bhumjaithai operates as the Thai establishment’s preferred mechanism for rural control: a patronage network disguised as a political party. The greatest threat to Thailand’s agrarian elite has always been the possibility of a united rural movement, one that transcends local patronage networks and ethnic divisions to demand systemic change. This was seen in the Farmers Federation of the 1970s and the Red Shirt Movement of the 2000s. Bhumjaithai’s core function is to prevent this fraternity from being realised again. By channeling peasant grievances into hyper-local demands; road repairs, village-level infrastructure, the party ensures that discontent never escalates into a broader critique of land inequality or wealth concentration.
